Bar & Event Space

Named after Max Havelaar, we are located in downtown Amsterdam in a 1651 Rijkmonument. Surrounded by the best coffeeshops, food, restaurants, shops and tourist spots, in literally the most central spot in between the red light district and the Jordaan. Ideal hidden gem for an impromptu refreshment or meeting place, steeped in history.

The bar is intimate and full of character, the layout across two buildings with an upstairs mezzanine allows for both small and large groups and many different uses. The downstairs displays art made from old Singer Sewing Machines and Bar Flies made from recycled materials, while upstairs hosts temporary Art Installations by local legends and friends of the bar. It is the perfect space to host your event, workshop, or party and for enjoying tunes from the DJ Booth with our late license. 

In a city where caf​é's are bars, and yet, coffeeshops sell weed, we are a favourite spot for locals, artists, music enthusiasts that are looking for local craft beer or choice of spirits in a part of history.

We take our Guinness pouring seriously at Café Havelaar. "It’s everything it promises to be. Every time. It’s what we’re famous for, and although we love all of our beers just the same, it will always hold a special place in our Guinness Draught loving hearts."

​Traditional German lager, which is still widely drunk in southern Germany and Austria today. Full-bodied, mildly sweet, and light in colour, with a low bitterness.

Asperius Brewery is a craft beer microbrewery located in restaurant Zest Food & Moore (Brew Pub) at Bilderdijkstraat 188 in Amsterdam. The brewery was founded in 2017 by Asparuh Asparuhov and Nikolay Hubenov.

​Sweet malt taste with explosions of citrus and fruity hop aromas, which ends with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

The Upstairs has been Amsterdam's best kept secret Art Pop Up by famed street artists.
These artists transform the entire upstairs of the historical venue as their canvas utilising the floor, ceiling and walls as they desire. The work is a heart pouring expression of whatever their hearts desire and is on a time limit.  The work, for the most part will be destroyed by the next artist, and if you missed it gone forever, in the spirit of graffiti. The Havelaar hopes to allow artists to be seen in the centre of town over a beer.
